Kids love potty training videos

If you’ve introduced your son or daughter to the potty, and he or she doesn’t actually do anything in it, you may need to find some inspiration.

Try a potty training video.

Admit it: you probably never thought you'd be buying a video with the word potty in the title. Our downstairs family room is packed full of Barbie, Disney, Scooby Doo, Bob the Builder, Barney and a host of other childrens’ titles. So many that if I sold them all at a garage sale, I’d have enough to go out for an expensive night on the town.

But think about it. Kids love to watch videos. They love the action. They love the characters. They even love the dialogue. So, chances are, they’ll probably sit and watch a video about potty training, too.

Why Videos Work

Let’s face it: kids are just captivated by videos. So when it’s potty time in your household, it makes sense to show a video about potty training. I used one to train both of my kids and they couldn't get enough of it.

Potty training videos work because they show real-life children or animated characters doing the "deed" and feature catchy, sing-along tunes. This "entertainment" can improve learning and help your child make the transition from diapers to the potty more quickly.

My kids love to watch their favorite videos over and over again. Sometimes, I can even hear the songs from these tapes in my head. Do the lyrics "I-love-you, you-love-me" ring a bell?

The more children watch a video, the more they repeat the actions and words from it. Bingo! When children watch a video about potty training, they are more likely to put into practice those behaviors that will help them overcome this difficult milestone in their development.

Just make sure to step out of the way when your child runs to the bathroom and says, "Mommy, I want to try to go potty."

What’s Available

We live in the age of VHS so there’s quite a selection of potty training videos available for you and your child to choose from. Here’s a short list of the more popular potty training videos:
For those who enjoy the state-of-the-art in technology and have already bought DVD players, don’t fret. Titles like Bear in the Big Blue House are not only available in VHS, but also in DVD formats.
